Faculty & Staff Membership

Questions about Faculty & Staff Membership

Eligible University employees* will be able to purchase monthly membership access to Pitt’s newly opened state-of-the-art Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) beginning on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025.

The membership fee has been structured into two tiers to make it affordable for employees, while remaining competitive with private fitness and recreation facilities.

  • Employees earning less than $50,000 annually (or the hourly equivalent) will pay $35 for a monthly membership.
  • Employees earning $50,000 or more annually (or the hourly equivalent) will pay $45 for a monthly membership.

Membership fees will support the long-term sustainability of the RWC and ensure consistent, high-quality service and maintenance.

Why aren’t USW-represented staff able to purchase membership to access the new fitness and recreation facility?

The University is currently in negotiations with the USW regarding the terms of an initial collective bargaining agreement (CBA) covering represented staff, with the membership fee structure for represented staff to access the new Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) being a subject of those negotiations. While CBA negotiations continue, we will not offer represented staff access to the RWC. Once the University and the USW have ratified a CBA that includes an agreed upon membership fee structure for represented staff, access to the RWC will be based on the agreed upon membership fee structure.

Why do employees have to pay for membership when previous access to fitness facilities in Trees and Bellfield Halls was free?

The new Recreation and Wellness Center is a state-of-the-art facility that significantly expands access to modern wellness and fitness services. To maintain the quality and long-term sustainability of these services, all users will contribute. Faculty and eligible staff who previously had access to older facilities will have the opportunity to join the new RWC through an affordable membership program. The University has implemented a two-tier pricing plan to ensure membership fees are both fair and affordable, as well as comparable to similar modern fitness facilities. Membership fees will support the long-term sustainability of the RWC and ensure consistent, high-quality service and maintenance.

Why did the University close the fitness facilities in Bellfield and Trees Halls?

Due to budgetary as well as maintenance considerations, those spaces are closed, and all student-supporting recreation staff have been assigned to the new, state-of-the-art Recreation and Wellness Center. Currently, the University is evaluating the future use of these facilities.
